About Me

Kay Hamid is a pioneering figure in Singapore’s music industry, recognized as one of the first female solo artists to break through the country’s traditionally male-dominated club scene. Her distinctive voice, charisma, and commanding stage presence earned her the Best Performer Award at the 1985 Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Popular Song Contest, cementing her reputation as one of the region’s celebrated vocalists. Kay continued to break new ground with “Rintihan Dalam Gelita,” released in 1987. The album marked a significant milestone as one of the earliest Malay jazz and funk recordings from Singapore and Malaysia, bringing together prominent jazz musicians and composers. As a respected recording artist and performer, Kay fronted several leading bands and recorded with major international labels including PolyGram, WEA, and CBS Records. Her achievements extended beyond the recording studio. Kay made history as the first Malay vocalist to perform with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, appearing alongside conductor Lim Yau, music director Iskandar Mirza Ismail and physicist, professor, and composer Bernard Tan Tiong Gie. The collaboration further demonstrated her versatility and helped establish her place within Singapore’s evolving musical landscape. Kay also represented Singapore internationally as a song ambassador for the Singapore Tourism Board, performing at major national and cultural events. Among her notable appearances was the 1990 Singapore Jubilee Spectacular, where she performed before a national audience. In the 1990s, Kay chose to shift her focus toward family life and subsequently relocated to the United States. Although she stepped away from the public spotlight, her contribution to Singapore’s music scene has endured. Her pioneering career, groundbreaking performances, and distinctive musical legacy continue to earn her a respected place in the nation’s musical heritage. Longtime fans and a new generation of listeners will soon have the opportunity to reconnect with the remarkable voice that helped define an era of Singapore music.
